The Starter Home Competition run by the Department of Building and Housing yielded 140 entries with the aim of showing that house designs of good quality and affordability can be achieved with limited resources.
John Wright's entry was awarded Runner Up in Category 1 of the Competition. Designs in this category had to adhere to the strict parameters of the Department’s proposed simple house design document as well as:
- a limited budget of $168,000
- a restricted choice of materials
- a limited floor area
- other limits such as the area of windows and required roof slope
These restrictions made the design very challenging.
John’s design was commended for its wide appeal and rated especially highly for both energy efficiency and cost.
