This project involved modifying and extending an existing character home that was sited on a long, narrow section. The existing house was on flat land but the rear of the site sloped down toward a valley.

The completed house has three distinct parts:

• the original villa

• the existing extension, which was extensively refurbished and improved

• a new extension stepping down the slope, with two bedrooms and a bathroom

The design also incorporates a large open deck made from sustainable timber, that was positioned to take advantage of sun and views of the landscape.

Large glass and steel canopies were designed over the new deck. We have found that glass canopies work really well in Wellington's climate. They offer cover to the large opening double glazed bi-fold doors from the kitchen and family area, whilst allowing sunlight and warmth directly into the house all year round.

Sustainable solid bamboo flooring was used in the altered part of the house to a beautiful effect.

The project is well suited to a family that has varied demands and offers flexibility to cope with further changes in the future.

The owners say:
"We had clear ideas regarding the functionality we required from the alterations but were reliant on Travis to provide the design to deliver them, while ensuring the alterations connected with the existing house and the landscape.

Travis’s design features including the deck space, canopies, height of the new wing, materials used and the large bi-fold doors allowed this to be achieved.

The end result is - we love it. The design has delivered what we wanted – a new living space for our boys, wonderful indoor-outdoor connection, the views are great and we feel connected to the landscape."
