For many of our residential clients, the highest priority is to refurbish their kitchen and family living areas. This 'mid-century Modern' house in Wellington had a poorly planned, separate kitchen.

The first key to success for projects like this is to resolve a plan that provides a good working kitchen, while catering for the more fluid needs of a busy family with two working parents. The planning aspect of this project involved removing walls and reorienting the kitchen. Activities that used to be separated could now share an open-plan space. The study/library at the end can be open or closed with glazed sliding doors.

The second key to success is to design and detail joinery, fittings and finishes to engage the senses and complement the original house.  Our design aim here was to set up a “conversation” between new and old. The splashes of bold red balance the cool greens and blues of the harbour and trees seen through the windows. The custom-designed shelving provides for display and storage, but is also a feature in its own right.
